Passage of HB 223 will lead to secret hirings at city councils, county commissions, fair boards. The precedent will be set. This is just the beginning.The fact is, Wyoming always has known that an open process, while messy, creates the best results.It allows for scrutiny of the candidates, their past performance, their plans for their position.It allows for greater buy-in. The people do not ask: Who is this person, and why was he or she being shoved down our throats? Rather, they accept the results because they had a say in the matter.And it allows for the voters to observe their public officials in action.A perfect example of the effectiveness of this approach occurred right here when the Laramie County Community College trustees wisely had public meet-and-greet sessions for their finalists for the top job. President Joe Schaffer has been warmly received by the campus community and local residents as a result.We continue to wonder why candidates for the UW position want their names secret if they really do.Who would want to be forced on the people of Wyoming? Don t they want to know if the people of this great state like them and they like the people? How will they be received by UW professors, staff and students?
