I have a hypothesis for one of your potins - why did he come no.3 yesterday (and in several matches in the recent past).While Dhoni's natural attacking play has been curbed thanks to the pressure of a billion Indians who want him to win every match, coming one-down shows his responsibility as a captain. By being the essential thread that sews the entire batting that point forward he is preventing a batting collapse. Even one more wicket after the fall of an operner within the first 10 overs would boost the confidence of the opposition bowlers and once that happens, Indian batting is on a backfoot. My guess is that he is coming early to hold one end up till as long as possible. And if he plays his normal attacking self and gets out, the whole plan would come unstuck and that would not do, would it?And if you notice, he is not wasting any balls either - taking quick singles and making the other end batsman sweat. Like a true boss, he is putting his key subordinates in front and pepping them up from behind (or from the other end) to extract the most from them. This is a management mantra in vogue.What went wrong yesterday was that Gambir was getting too queasy (or greedy?)and not playing his shots which meant that Dhoni had to play out and get out.
